It seems that fraudsters love the sunshine as much as the rest of us, as newly released figures show that holiday booking fraud is on the increase, rising a staggering 20% in the last 12 months.
5,826 cases of holiday booking fraud were reported last year, compared to the previous year’s 4,910. Action Fraud which is the Met’s fraud and cybercrime unit, estimated this equates to a loss of £7.2m in the last 12 months. Meaning on average, each victim lost a staggering £1,200.
One of the most common scams involves fraudsters taking photos of villas and other holiday accommodation from legitimate sources and adverting them on either legitimate sites with fake details or on false web pages entirely. As the details have been taken from legitimate sources originally, these fake adverts can be very hard to spot.
One give-away is that the price is too good to be true, another big warning sign is they will insist you pay via bank transfer or cash, rather though the secure site. Always use the payment method the site recommends and always read reviews of the website before parting with any money.

A HooYu request takes less than a couple of minutes and is done purely online with no hassle to either party, you can quickly confirm that the person offering the accommodation is who they say they are, it can even be used if you are the person offering a property for rent. You can use HooYu to check potential renters are legitimate.
Confirming the identity of the person you’re dealing with is a simple way to protect yourself from this sort of holiday fraud and can give you piece of mind when transacting online, leaving you to worry about packing enough sun-cream and not about who you are dealing with.
